What are the health plan options?
Covered California for Small Business offers four levels of coverage — Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum — each with multiple plan options. We make it easy for you to choose not one level, but two adjoining levels of coverage. You pick. Your employees have the option to select any plan within those two levels. For example, you can control your budget by selecting a Silver plan as your reference plan while allowing employees to move up to Gold. This provides your employees with a choice of multiple health plan options from private health insurance companies, allowing them to find one that fits their needs and budget.
You are eligible for Covered California for Small Business if:
- You have at least one but no more than 100 eligible employees and meet certain contribution and participation requirements.
- You have at least one employee who receives a W-2.
- The majority of your eligible employees live in California.
For coverage starting Jan. 1, 2016, you are eligible for Covered California for Small Business if you have 100 or fewer full-time-equivalent employees.
If you are a sole proprietor, with no W-2-receiving employees, you may be eligible to purchase coverage through Covered California’s individual marketplace.
Did you know you could be eligible for a tax credit?
As a small-business owner, you may qualify for a federal tax credit to help offset the cost of providing health insurance to your employees by purchasing coverage with Covered California for Small Business. To qualify for a tax credit, employers must contribute at least 50 percent of their employee premium costs.
Currently, federal tax credits are only available to small businesses that purchase health insurance through Covered California for Small Business. The maximum available tax credit is 50 percent of insurance premium expenses and is available for a total of two consecutive years.
Which health insurance companies are available?
Covered California for Small Business has six health insurance companies that are available for year-round enrollment in the small-business program. Because employees have the opportunity to compare and select health plans at a variety of price points, the result is greater choice and coverage that is more closely tailored to individual needs. Available companies include Blue Shield, HealthNet, Kaiser Permanente, CCHP Health Plan, Western Health Advantage and Sharp Health Plan
